Effects of Voltage Fluctuation
The unbalanced power supply mainly hinders the efficient working of motors, which, in turn, results into the breakdown or deterioration of the machinery plant. The effect of unbalanced input voltage on three phase motor includes:
- With 5% unbalanced input voltage, the capacity of the motor reduces by 40% and electric consumption increases by 20 25%.
- Higher losses of motors also increase the losses of cables, switches, transformers etc.
- To avoid frequent tripping, the motor relays are kept higher than actual limits. Motors cannot withstand high current over a long period of time and burn out. This way, the current flows through the relays, contractors, cables etc., resulting into the failure of the equipment or fire.
